What are the main concerns while taking your child to an audiologist?

Hearing Loss in Children:

Hearing is very important for children, as hearing is the first step to speaking. But some suffer from hearing disabilities right from their birth or childhood. They find it difficult to speak or develop languages. If your infant or kid is having hearing impairments or hearing loss, he/she will show the following signs.

  • Does not respond to sounds
  • Does not make babbling sounds
  • Speech is delayed
  • Speech is not clear
  • Difficulty identifying the source of sounds or speech
These are some of the common signs that you might trace in your child if he/she is victimized by hearing issues.

Hearing loss happens due to various causes. It cannot be denied that these children suffer a lot until they are treated. Through treatment, some aid can be given to make the child hear.

Consulting an Audiologist:

It can be a tougher situation to see your young one suffering from hearing impairments in children. But you are not helpless. An audiologist is someone whom you should be consulting to get the right guidance for your child.

Asking questions to your audiologist is the most important step while taking your child to the audiologist. You may not know everything and it is totally fine. You can ask the audiologist about the severity of your child’s hearing loss. You can ask him/her to explain to you the terms sensorineural, conductive, mixed, mild, moderate, severe, profound, and auditory neuropathy. You can ask if both the ears are affected, and what can be done for the child’s communication and education. You can ask what you should do as a parent to make your child’s life comfortable. You can ask about the parental support groups that can aid you in bringing up your child. You can request him/her to educate you on the options to treat your child’s hearing loss.

In most cases, hearing loss is treatable. Consult an audiologist to receive the appropriate treatment for your child’s hearing condition. Consulting an audiologist is better than consulting an otolaryngologist. An otolaryngologist focuses on complex medical issues related to the ear, nose and throat, whereas an audiologist is an expert who assesses and identifies the hearing disorder and provides you medical solutions. You can take the liberty to clarify your doubts before accepting any treatment or helping aids.

You can expect the audiologist to carry out several tests to analyze the level of hearing loss of your child. Audiometry tests, tympanometry, acoustic reflexes, otoacoustic emissions, speech audiometry, and word recognition are some of the common tests used by audiologists to assess the severity of hearing loss in your child. Following the assessment, treatment will be carried out.

How will it be treated:

After analyzing the situation of your child your audiologist might come out with the following solutions.

Cochlear Implant:

The cochlear implant is not similar to hearing aids. A hearing aid amplifies the sound to be sensed by the damaged ears. It is a small, electronic device that aids in hearing impairments. The cochlear implant is done through both surgery and significant therapy. However, it should be understood that the device helps to hear and doesn’t restore hearing.

Bone Bridge Implant:

A bone bridge implant is used to treat conductive, mixed, or unilateral hearing loss. As it is completely placed under the skin, it doesn’t cause any open wounds or maintenance for the skin. This is the first of its kind in the world.

Speech Therapy:

From the name itself, it is evident that speech therapy trains people with speaking disabilities to communicate without any hurdles. We are well aware that, at times, hearing impairments might also lead to speaking disabilities. This training is given by a speech therapist. Speech therapy is given in the cases of hearing impairments as well. Speech therapists also collaborate with audiologists in the treatment of hearing loss.

The treatment of hearing loss is limitless. There are several ways to treat hearing loss. You also have options like assistive listening devices, frequency modulation systems, and infrared listening devices to aid your kid’s hearing loss with high-quality hearing assistance. At times, a facial nerve monitor reduces the risks taking place during ENT treatments is used. Consult an audiologist before carrying out any treatment.

Earwax Blockage - Everything You Should Know

Earwax, medically known as cerumen, is a waxy oil that is produced by earwax glands. This is to protect the inner parts of the ears, from the microorganisms, dust, and foreign objects. After the secretion, this oil gets hardened and finds its way out of the ears naturally.

What Causes Earwax Buildup?

Earwax buildup occurs when there is excessive secretion of cerumen than what’s necessary and also when the hardened oil fails to find its way out. Both the cases can lead to earwax buildup, ear block, and temporary hearing loss, eventually. Sometimes people who are cleaning might accidentally push the wax further deep causing the blockage.

Signs and Symptoms of Earwax Blockages

Buzzing or ringing sound in the ear is a common sign of earwax blockage. You might lose hearing ability temporarily based on the percentage of the block.

Becoming aware of the inner voice when you talk, a sense of fullness in the ear, and sometimes earache are the other signs of it.

Earwax Buildup in Children

Earaches are associated with infants and children more than the adults. In children, you can find earwax buildup by checking for the darker brown substance inside the ear walls. Using ear swabs, however sensitive they are, can damage ear canal linings, and eardrums in extreme cases.  Consulting an ENT specialist and seeking assistance is a sensible thing to do.

Earwax and the Infection -

Earwax blockage will become an infection only when the buildup stays inside the ear walls for too long. Ear infections can cause excruciating pain and such an ear infection in children can become a nightmare to live for both the child and to the parents.

This pain could not be subsidised, and a discharge from the ear also could be observed in the case of infections caused by earwax buildup. Other symptoms include fever, coughing, and giddiness.

Treatment for Earwax Blockage and Infection -

Followed by the initial diagnosis at the ENT hospital, the ear specialist uses an otoscope that helps them to see the inner ear.

Certain oils or hydrogen peroxide to soften the earwax block. Then the ear doctor may use irrigation, a technique where water is sent like a stream, inside the ear to clean the block. Curette, a curved instrument, is also used to clean earwax blockage.

Earwax removal is a simple process. Once the block is cleared, it is important to follow the after-care instructions by your doctor. Ear irrigation kits are also available as the over-the-counter kits. You can practice as instructed by your ENT specialist.

Softening and irrigation techniques should work. However, sometimes the softeners could only melt the outer layer of the wax and force removing might cause damage. If your condition is not improving, consult your doctor.

How to Avoid Earwax Blockages

Generally self-care and hygiene are the remedies for earwax blockages. But it is essential to see your ENT specialist periodically to maintain ear hygiene. It becomes imperative if your ear glands produce more cerumen.

It is common to see people using ear swabs to remove the earwax buildup. Using a soft and sensitive ear swab once or twice a week might help you keep your ears clean but in order to remove a blockage, you should reach out to an ENT clinic.

If you feel there is a block inside your ear and you could not hear properly, do not try to insert any swab, paper rolls or any other item. They will only cause more damage.

Even though earache, ear discharge, and the sense of fullness are the symptoms of earwax blockage, there are other conditions that show the similar symptoms.

The Takeaways -

Earwax buildup is a common issue in people who secrete more cerumen. This can happen in both children and adults. If you know how to use the irrigation method, try it periodically based on your doctor’s recommendation. In children, consult your ENT doctor to get the wax removed.

Earwax is useful for your ears. It keeps them clean, and protects in many ways. Once the work is done, the wax gets washed away by the body. And, all this happens naturally. Follow your doctor’s recommendation to keep your ears clean.

Cochlear Implants - Are You a Candidate?

Cochlear implant surgery is a surgery done by placing an electronic device to replace the function of the inner ear. Unlike the hearing aids these implants do not amplify sound, instead they send sound in the form of electrical signals (by bypassing damaged parts of the ear) through the auditory nerve to the brain.
The surgery is safe and therefore you can rely on the same for improving your hearing ability. This surgery for hearing loss is suitable for both seniors and kids who have got auditory issues.

Who Can Benefit From Cochlear Implants?

  • The Cochlear implant procedure is suitable for -
  • Patients who suffer from moderate to acute hearing loss in both the ears
  • People who are born deaf
  • Those who are not benefited from other hearing aids
However, the candidacy for this procedure can also be confirmed by an ENT specialist after a thorough examination.

The Procedure

  • A cochlear implant surgery is carried out under general anaesthesia which ease the severity of the pain experienced.
  • A small incision will be made behind the ear and a hole will be made on the bone through which the implant will be inserted
  • Next step will be to insert the electrode into the cochlea (inner ear)
  • A component called the receiver will be inserted into a pocket made behind the ear. This ensures that the device is held in place and is close to the skin to transfer the electrical signals.
Recovery

The entire process lasts between three to four hours. This is not a major surgery but the patient may have to stay overnight for observation. There would be a few stitches and bandages behind the ear and the patient will have to return after a week for a follow-up.

When can the patient start to hear?

The patient will not be able to hear soon after the operation. You can hear only after you receive the external parts. There would be a waiting period for 3 to 6 weeks to ensure that the wound has healed completely and once the swelling goes away your doctor will do the fitting and programming. The patient will then work side by side with audiologists and speech therapists to improve communication.

Precautions

There are no severe restrictions for people living with implants; however, they should avoid contact sports since it can cause damage to the implant. And since the implant parts are made of metal you will not be able to get an MRI scan.

Benefits of cochlear implants

  • Hearing-loss is a severe issue and hearing-aids don’t work for everyone. This is the reason ear implants for hearing loss have been gaining massive popularity.
  • Bilateral hearing can be highly facilitated by cochlear implants. Sounds from two-ears are being merged effectively and so that you can hear sounds clearly. More dimensional and richer sounds will be delivered to your ears with the usage of these implants.
Factors affecting cochlear implants

  • Cochlear implant procedure is dependent on hearing-loss severity.
  • Cochlear condition.
  • Medical conditions.
  • Practising intensity of these implants.
  • Hearing-loss tenure.
  • Best features of cochlear-implant devices
  • Cochlear-implant devices can be mechanically operated and they are medically approved devices preventing hear-loss.
  • Damaged inner-ear functionality can be completely replaced by these devices for improving hearing capacity.
  • These devices have got better compatibility with MP3players, mobile phones and other related audio devices.
  • Innumerable wearing options can be availed out of which the best one can be chosen that can fulfil your lifestyle needs.
  • Remote controls can be used for making flexible usage of these devices.
  • These devices are battery-operated and the batteries can be recharged from time to time. Moreover, only eco-friendly batteries are being used in these devices.
